BAND MUSIC

BRIGHTEN UP.9

(To the Editor). Sir, — I was pleased to see that Mr. | "Walter Dean had broqght under the j notice of the Rotorua Borough Goun- j cil the advisability of^allowing the municipal band to play in the streets j on Saturday evenings. Scant consideration appears to have. been given j this suggestion, and the informationj that .the band plays every alternate Sunday afternoon in the Government Grounds does not meet the sit- 1 uation. What Mr. Dean aims at, I take it, is that something should he ; done to enliven the streets on the late shopping night and put a little; cheerfulness and colour into the week-end. With the exception of ; those who stroll through the Sanatorium Gardens on Sunday afternoons, residents of Rotorua hear practically ; nothing of the band. This should not be the case. The band costs quite a; tidy sum per annum to run, and the residents have a reasonable excuse: for asking that the streets be brightened up a little for a couple of hours on Saturday night. The town is too* dull at night time and bright band. music would prove a welcome attrac-i tion. — I am, etc.
