MAJESTIC THEATRE TO-NIGHT
DOUBLE FEATURE PRGGRAMME OVERTURE 7.30 p.m. "A" Certificate Three noted orchestras provided the dance, orchestral and inspirational music for RKO-Radio-Pictures "Girl of the Rio" colourful story of old Mexico, starring Dolores Del Rio, which opens Saturday at the Majestic Theatre. The internationally famous Marimba Band and Leon Herriford's Negro Orchestra of 14 pieces. The action of the story revolves about the gay night life in the popular casinos and cafes just below the Mexican border. Opposite Miss Del Rio is Leo Carrilo. Others in the cast are Lucille Gleason, Norman Foster, Edna Murphy and Stanley Fields. SECOND FEATURE The surging drama that is hidden beneath the veneer of a large city is brought out in an engrossing manner in "The Beast of the City" which opens at the Majestic Theatre on Saturday. The story deals with the rise of a police captain who becomes chief of police as a reward for his heroic efforts in fighting an underworld czar. Baulked by political interference, by "leaks" in the department, by opposition , even from the ref orm organisation which placed him in office, j he fights an almost single-handed batI tle for the law. Underlying tlie plot is ; the romance between an underworld i girl and the chiefs younger brother, ■ a deteetive who ultimately serves as ! a secret sourse of information in rej gard to police moves. j Walter Iluston is a compelling figI ure as the police chief who finally ! pays for a city's security with his I life. Jean Harlow scores as the unI derworld girl and a splendid portrayj al is offer ed by Wallace Ford as the deteetive who turns traitor.
