COMMENTS ON PLAY MATTERS OF MOMENT AND GAMES REYIEWED EXECUTIVE MEETING

(By

H.S.O.S. (A) v. Ngongotaha This was an exceedingly slow game to watch. Ngongotaha's good displays seam to fluctuate for they certainly had a day off last Saturday. It is unfortunate that they are continually compelled to play short as it so happens that through these gaps, the team has to be continually chopping and changing about the positions of the different players and consequently loses opportunities for working into an advantageous combination. Old Students played a much better game than their opponents, but they were heavier than the local lads but lacked that quality of quiclc rucking which is so essential to good forward play. Rotorua forwards, I am convinced, threw the game away by playing Matamata's game. Ilnstead of letting the ball back to their back-line quickly, they fought in the pack with it. McLeay, Neems and Troughton were the most prominent of the Matamata pack, while Berghan, Bell, Matthews and Taiapa shared the honours for Rotorua. B. Hiini played well but spoilt a good exhibition by hanging on when he should have fed the ball back. There was not much to choose between Dawson, the local half, and Walsh, his opponent. The former, if anything, got the ball away a little quicker and cleaner and made more of his opportunities. Roberts, the Matamata full-back, was better than Lillas on the day, the kicking of the latter being very erratic. Rotorua Backs Better. The local back-line was definitely superior on the day, although, to my : mind, Lowrie, the Matamata captain, was one of the best men on the ground. Park and Hinton did not eombine too well but were possibly feeling the effects of their game in 1 Auckland on Thursday. : Steele, on the wing, played a great game, his second try being a fine combination of speed and determination. The return match in Matamata this coming Saturday should be an excellent exhibition.

also have room for improvement. Y. Hale (Old Students) was outstanding for her good shooting while D. Cronin proved a good defender for Ngongotaha. Score H.S.O.S. (A) 25, Ngongotaha 5. Waratah v. Kowhai This was easily the best game of the day. Both teams commenced with only eight players but this did not mar a good exhibition. From the whistle both teams settled down to hard play strenuous efforts being kept up throughout the game. Waratah were the first to score but Kowhai soon followed suit. In the first half Waratah's sure, speedy passing gave them the better of the game. In the second spell Kowhai made an excellent recovery and although shooting more gojals than their opponents were unable to appreciably decrease the lead which Waratah had gained. Score Waratah 19, Kowhai 13. H.S.O.S. (B) v. Kiwi The former team easily outelassed their opponents, but Kiwi are gaining experience from the senior teams and are gradually improving. They sh'ould not however, abandon the idea of securing a good coach. Score H.S.O.S. (B) 31, Kiwi 3. Executive Meeting At a meeting held last Monday evening word was received that on account of term holidays, High School wished to withdraw from the Wednesday competition. As their "A" team is one of the leading teams for this competition the advice was received | with regret. J It was resolved that a "B" repre- ! sentative team be sent to play Thames on September 9, and a team consisting of Wednesday players be sent to Opotiki on September 14. Wednesday Competition With the withdrawal of High School from this competition it will make the season shorter and in two or three weeks basketball will be finished. Players wishing to secure a place in the representative team leaving for Op'otilci on the 14th next month will have to show their best form in the remaining games. Kowhai v. Konini Both teams played well but Konini was handicapped by having only two forwards, who had a strong defence against them. E. Hardie has regained her good form and played an excellent forward game for Kowhai. She was responsible for most of their goals. Score Kowhai 17, Konini 6. Waratah v. Tui Waratah' did not have such an easy game as they anticipated. Tui played well against their 'experienced players j and if they maintain this improved I PMy they will be expected to be well j up at the top of the ladder next

season. Score Waratah 20, Tui 4. Mokoia v. Ngaio As only three of Mokoia's players attended, Ngaio was credited with the decision. Ngongotaha v. Reporoa. A team of girls from Reporoa played a Ngongotaha team at basketball last week-end. Ngongotaha had the Reporoa girls on the defence all the time, winning 11 — 5. Colleen Cronin and Joyce Prenter played a great game in the goal. After afternoon tea had been served, a team of men from Reporoa played a Ngongotaha team. The'home | side, being unable to field a full team, had to replace with three girls. i The Ngongotaha teams hope to visit Reporoa in the near future.
