— By Telegraph— Copyright)
Sydney, Wednesday. A paper on the population factors affecting employment was read at the Science Congress, and revealed that only 57 per cent. of Australia's bread-winners were engaged in actual production. Commerce and transport absorbed 24 per cent., and professional and domestic- occupations about 18 per cent. The high proportion iri commerce and transport necessarily contributed to the high costs which handicapped Australian production. The paper was prepared by Mr. H. Exley. He calculated that for every 100 producers in New Zealand there were 83 non-producers. The position in both countries, he contended, was unhealthy and inimieal to progress.
