"Is there such a thing as nicotineless tobacco — tobacco with no nieotine in it?" askecl a customer of a Wellington tobacconist the other day. "No," said the tobaeconist, "there is not. But there is much less nieotine in some brands than others." "And is there no way of extracting the stuff ?" enquired the customer, adding, "poisonous, isn't it?" "It's deadly," replied the tobaeconist, and continued: "The only way, I believe, is to roast the tobacco, same as the manufacturers of the New Zealand brands are J doing. They have installed an elaborate plant in their factory, I'm told for the purpose." "And does the roasting 'really . get rid of the nieotine?" queried the customer. "Most of it. Suflflcient to make it safe for the smolter to indulge to any 'extent. Greatly improves the flavour and bouquet, t'oo. It's a wonderful process." Replying to a further question the tobaeconist said: "There are only four brands of toasted: Riverhead Gold, Cut Plug No. 10, Cavendish and Navy Cut No. 3." The customer is "trying them out." ' 4
