RANFURLY SHIELD CANTERBURY INFLICT SOLID DEFEAT ON INVADERS HART'S BRILLANCE
Christchurch, Saturday. t Playing a winning gama from start to finish Canterbury repulsed the Auckland challenge today for the Ranfurly Shield by 14 points to nil. Auckland put up a great fight, but could not get going in the face of determined forward rucking and bitter tackling by Canterbury. Auckland hooked brilliantly in the early stages and it looked an odds on chance for them. The Canterbury . f orwards excelled themselves, however, and worked brilliantly in the loose. At times Canterbury played like a team possessed and launched attack after attack on their opponents' line and only grim tackling kept tho score from being greater than it was. Auckland was not without a share of bad luck, however, and several times were within an ace of clinching a brilliant movement only for something to go wrong at the critical moment. The weather was at its best, the ground in excellent order and the game was witnessed by a great crowd. Cottrell captained Canterbury and Hadley Auckland. Splendid T vy Canterbury's first score came from a wonderful line run by Havt. The All Blaclc winger tore down the field like a man possessed. Bueh tackled him at the corner, but his momentum carried him over. It was a brilliant try, but Roberts faiied to add the major points. The goal kicker made amends, however, when be ldeked a magnificent penalty goal from fifty yards out. Corner put in some yeoman service for Auckland, but the fast breaking southern forwards gave the five-eighths little chance to find their feet. Before halftime, however, first Palmer and then Corner wero brought down within an ace of the Canterbury line and Caughey was unlucky with a pot at goal. No Let Up After the interval Canterbury increased the pressure and gave Auck-
land a torrid time. Cottrell went over with several players clinging, and Auckland was lucky to secure a force. Following this Busli beat Innes to the toueh by the barest of margins. Auckland raliied and looked dangerous, but Canterbury were soon at them again and opened out fanwise in attack after attack. They were rewarded when Boutery the midget halfback dived over in the corner and Roberts converted a wonderful try with a magnificent kick. Stung by reverses Auckland put everything they had into the play. Millilcen and Pearson successfully went within an ace of sdoring-. Then Caughey dropped a pass right under the posts. To add to the disappointment a fine penalty kick by Bush just missed. It was Canterbury's day, however, and a brilliant cut-in by Innes sent Brown over unopposed. In a dying effort Auckland came again and Caughey cut out Hart and Olliver only to be dumped by Roberts when a score seemed certain. Canterbury were again on attack and clearly superior when time sounded with the score Canterbury 14, Auckland nil.
