SOME GOOD FIELDS CARDED FOR PAKURANGA TO-MORROW - REVIEW OF PROSPECTS POSSIBSLITY OF INTEREST1NG RACE IN HUNT CUP

(Notes by

Good fields are carded for tl e annual meeting of the Pakuranga Hunt Club, which opens at Ellerslie to-morrow, and racing promises to be inteiesl'ng. This meeting is the first ^ of the larger racing programmes in the Auckland province for the new season. A good proportion of the. better known performers in the northein end of the Island will f»c.e the starter.

Fields are good, but the meeting would probably be a lot more popular with the public generally if some adequate reduction were made in cost of attendance. It seems as if the authorities which sway the destinias of the city racing clubs will not face facts and realise that the average raoegoer cannot alford the large sums demanded for entry to Ellerslie and h mce that particular club is playing right into the hands of the bookmaker. The attendance is likely to be close on 40 per cent. less than last year. The day opens with the" Greenmount Steeples, and there are nine actually paid for. Of these, all except Commentator are facing other engageirients and the form of Gommentator is not such that anyone would risk the family plate on his chances. The whole of the rest are in the Hunt Cup, and some are o1*— J1 ■ let. Withal, they are not a particularly choice lot at that. The roar. horse Absent, from the Ellerslie stable, has as good a s'et of jumping credentials as anything, but he has not yet stuck on for the full 2S miles though he should hav i improved . oi his last showing at Ellerslie. Lenau hin, from the Bellingham stable, is from a team which has never sent ou a real dud and never sent out a real champion. Lenaubin was exn >cted t win last year, but missed. Still, he is not bad. General Lu is something which, in "Canard's" opinion, woulc look fine between the shafts of a mill float, for it is almost useless persevering with him. He has been z frank disappointment ever since the brother to Master Lu was tried oir and only a super-optimist would go on with him. He works well, eats well and drinks well, but as "Joh: Jorocks" said, "when it comes to z bit o' heavv racin', 'e's all of a tremmle." No General Lu in mine. Beila is a handy sort, but barely up to thisstamp. She looks more like a point-to-point type ICoewhiwhi is chiefly remembered by "Canard" for providing two of the finest spills ever seen or Ellerslie course. In his first race lasi time out he stood on his head at the first jump and shot his rider over the rails at the side, and in his second race he rrversed the process. He sai down on landing and his rider slithered off over the tails. All very huraorous, but not just the inducement ti. put the ever-scaree ready on hira Roadman won a point-to-point last year and is spoken of as a good hon st but not brilliant sort. He is as likely as anything in the minimum division, Gaiapago was probably so named m he is as ungainly as the turtles from which he perhaps takes his name. Arapawa has been a starter at Ellerslie on every possible occasion for the last three years in hunters' events and has got round — once. Providing they start, there should be preferences for — Lenaubin Absent. Roadman from — GREENMOUNT STEEPLES, of £100, about 2J miles: Absent 9.13, Commentator 9.13, Lenaubin 9.10, General Lu 9.10, Beila 9.1, Koewhiwhi 9.0. Roadman 9.0, Gaiapago 9.0, Arapawa 9 0. * * * # There are some real roughies in the Harris Memorial Hurdles, added to Thespis in the Bracelet, Tapapa in the Bracelet, and Arapawa in the Greenmount and Cup. The other four are indulging in their first essay under silk and all told it looks like "a pleasant time being had by all." Cargen, the topweight, has seasoning on his sid's but his jumping is not by any means like Caesar's wife. Te Homai would appeal more but he may not start, and in any case, he has been off the scene for a while. Thespis has been schooling well and is a hurdler of promise, but has a weaker field to face in the Bracelet. The Rotorua trained Tapapa (ex-Airman ' has as reasonable a chance as anything, for "Canard" noticed him runhing along into a nice position behind Paddon, High Commissionrr and Royal Visitor in a Maiden Hurdle race at Te Rapa and a glance at their subsequent reeords will show that he is evidently no slouch. He has pleased "Canard" in his moving on the Ro+orua track a couple of times recently. though he looks a bit light in con ditton. Thames folk expect Emancipation, whose lady owners reside at Hikutaia, to give a good acc'ount of himself, but this is asking a horse a big question for his first time over

battens. Given a stand-up it looks I like — - ICargen Te Homai Tapapa from HARRIS MEMORIAL HURDLES, of £100; 11 miles: Cargen 10.4, Te Homai 10.0, Thespis 9.8, Tapapa 9.0, Arapawa 9.0, Carl Hertz 9.0, Lurina 9.0, John Bull 9.0, Emancipation 9.0. Sf * * 9 Twenty-one hacks are set down to contest the Sylvia Park seven, headed by the Catmint filly Imamint, and if she has gone on the right yvay since the Winter meeting, she should be prominent. Great things are expected by the Vex'coe family of L'Allegro, and chis fellow is well suited by the distance, !In addition his early brillianey :s in his favour in the big field. Ryan has done so well in his placing of the Top Gallant horse Royal vjallant that he must be entithd to any amount of .•espect, and he is likely to go a very good race indeed. "Canard" for 'one s well on his sidq. Jack Wallace's Jigantic is making his first appearance as a three-year-old, and it will e interesting to see how he shapes. .ast season he gave signs of winning •■.is races at the buiness end and an ssay over seven may give a line on his uture. Reports from Te Aroha credit lim with a well-trained appearance. Fsychologist is an unlucky sort of , orse and is not easy to keep right, ■ut he may improve with age. The Psychology gets usually do. Great 'hings w >re expected of the three-year-old Bambury, who had only two fax'ts for a second and a win last . ear before he went wrong. His win was so easy that all Te Awamutu creiited him with being something out xf the ordinary, but he went wrong .md this is his reappearance. He ;as been galloping wuh r \markable reedom with excellent trial taclde, ind might spring a surprise on the xeads. Another three-year-old is Bugle Call, and the Huntin0- Song gelding is running nicely in his work xt Takanini, where he is trained. His reappearance will also cause comment. Con Coakley is bringing up Con Fuoco (more readily known as Confusion imongst the lads) from Thames. As i two-year-old Con Fuoco was promisng, but the hard tracks were against «xim and he was as soro as a boil for nost of the season. He might run a decent race with the going in his favour. On Approval showed a bit ,ff early pace at times last season, hut form points to — Royal Gallant L'Allegro Imamint from — SYLVIA PARK HANDICAP, of fl'OO; 7 furlongs: L'Allegro 9.0, Imamint 9.0, Royal Gallant 8.6, Gigantic 3.5, Psychologist 8.5, Sea Ruler 8.0, Bambury 7.10, Bugle Call 7.2, Lord Aintree 7.2, Sweet Whisper, Illumieagh, Kaha, Traced, On Approval, /ilma, Sbon Latour, Golondrina, Con Euoco, Merry Lap, Demylus, Dellain, J.0. * * * The Jellicoe Handicap, the main middle distance fiutter of the day, sees a welcome back to the turf of old bung-eyed Corinax, and a win for Jack Williamson's veteran would be very popular (especially with the wool-brokers). However, the old chap is working well and he always runs oest fresh up. There are many worse chances in the heat than his. Chief Link has the pride of place and has Jeserved it on his Trentham running, but the extra two furlongs might find out the Chief Ruler — Silver Link gelding, though the mother, Silver Link (Archilles — Secret Link) was a stayer. Royal Artist, who will, with Prinee of Orange, represent Dick Reid, has disappointed too often. However, be always seems to be flying over the last 20 yards and has been ;erribly unlucky in missing the judge on one prominent occasion (that was vvhen Bob Lusk gave one of his fam>us dead-heats). It is pretty hard to letermine just what to do about Protomint. He all but scooped the Cornvall, ran like a chariipion one day and a goat the other at Trentham, and has a nasty knack of getting badly left. However, it he does get away it should be "shut the gate." King's Archer is another that gives dxe punters cold shivers. He has put xp time on the track equalling the Ellerslie rccord for 11 miles, and won in a tick over it and then the brute comes out and tails off in a slow-run race. He is, in "Canard's" opinion, a moody brute, but if on his game, capable of winning the b"st

handicap in New Zealand. Malahat has been running cosistently at Gisborne, but the company was not so select. However, he has 7.4 to carry, I not 9.9, which he had at the Bay, and : this should keep him in the running. He is working nicely. Maori Boy, if the going is hock-deep, would have to be reckoned with", despite the fact that he has not had any racing to speak of for a long while. He ran a nice race for a place the last day at Ellerslie and might be a possible upsetter. True Blood is not a spent light, and as he is trained on the outer, nothing is known of his form. , He is always liable to do the "tom- j mies" a good turn, especially against his owners' ideas, for twice he has bolted in unbacked by his party. He ; was putting in the licks at the busi- \ ness end at Trentham. Gay Cockade \ is going well at work, but he is an "iffy" brute. Te Hoia is a fair sort, but only seems to run his best for Hector Gray, and that's a pilot he can't have nowadays. One of the : most likely in the lightweight division is Ben Goldwater's Catoma, and he' should take a hand in the finish if his track work be any criterion. Prince of Orange is Dick Reid's seeond string (there is a eontigency of something), but the races are not run j on Boyne Day and he does not look to have even King Billy's chance. Cruachan and Royal Survey, both moderates, complete the field, and the public may go for — Protomint Catoma King's Archer from — JELLICOE HANDICAP, of£200; one and a quarter miles: Chief Link 9.0, Corinax 8.8, Royal Artist 7.12, Protomint 7.10, King's Archer 7.8, Malahat 7.4, Maori Boy 7.2, True Blood 7.2, Gay Cockade, Te Hoia, Catoma, Patutahi, Prince of Orange, Royal Survey, Cruachan, 7.0. * ■•!■• *' A dozen are left in the Hunt Steeples, and most of them have already been dealt with in the Greenmount. In any case, there is only a 191b difference in the weights. Mashoor has never really done much ! since McGregor flogged him home through the crowd on the memorable occasion of the riot at Ellerslie. He will be lucky to get round three miles. Trouble won so comfortably at the Manawatu meeting that he is likely to give a lot of cheelc, but in view of Ihe amount of racing over country and the consistent form Cat-i-mes has displayed down at the Poverty Bay meeting, this should stand to him and he should prove very hard to beat. In any case, a win for Bill Taylor would be very popular, for he is one of the few owner-trainers who races for the fun of it. Another with a show is Dr. Grant's Haakon, who was finishing well last time out at Ellerslie. Of the field, none of the others appear to have more than a jumper's chance, and the favourites may include Trouble, Absent, Lenaubin, Cat-i-mes and Haakon, the best three reading — Cat-i-mes Trouble Absent from PAKURANGA HUNT CUP, of £250; about 3 miles: Mashoor 10.5, Trouble 10.0, Absent 9.9, General Lu 9.6, Lenaubin 9.6, Cat-i-mes, Haakon, Arapawa, Roadman, Beila, Koewhiwhi Gaiapago 7 0. * * * The field of 11 in the Auckland mile includes "Nudger" Cucksey's Princess Bede and the Tirau owner likes his mare's chances, but she has her work cut out on recent form to down Jimmie Buchanan's Hawthorn. Teels, the aristocratie sister of the Auckland cup-winner Motere, is always going to win, but just doesn't. However, he may maka amends here. Welcome Lu and Kiltowyn are both fair sorts, but there is a little thing ealled Top Light which "Canard" noticed running on in a field of 31 at Waikato after getting all the worst of the running. If he runs true to that he may spring a surprise. The best may be — Hawthorn Top Light Princess Bede from AUCKLAND HANDICAP, of £100, 1m. Pxuncess Bede 8.12, Hawthorn 8.0 Teels 7.7, Welcome Lu 7.3, Marching Song, Jewelled Girdle, Landlubber, Kiltowyn, Kixxd Words, Top Light, Pantheon filly, 7.0. * * -•!= Then comes the "Madmen's Derby," as the Ladies' Bracelet is known amongst the "cognoscenti," and they surely are a rough lot. Some may be having their second start and probably some their last. In any case, they will get precious little help from their amateur hoops, but the best may be — Valsimon Tapapa Thespis from LADIES BRACELET, of £100; l\. miles: Val Simon 11.3, Thespis 11.1, Tapapa, Clontarf Bill, John Bull, Consorfc, Egyptian King, Luxdna 10.7. * * * The losing hxat is the Dunedin open sprint, and form here is lacking iix nxany cases. Chief Link appaals more here than in the Jellicoe, but High Comedy may find it too wet and Sargon has just commenced after two seasons' absence from the track. Chromadyne should be suited by heavy going, as should King Ford, but he has C'ammiek to carry as well as his ordinary handicap. Vandyke could do it if he would and if Simpson is aboard would be tough. Plampton Park can go the fastest five furlongs of any horse in training, but has not been well ridden of late. Golondrina must have been entered as a joke and Lord Aintree does not appeal. Boroscope and Cruachan are not fancied, but the going is in favour of Werata, the Thames horse, having the toe and being pretty well. Fav-' ourites may be — Chromadyne Vandyke Hampton Park from — DUNEDIN HANDICAP, of £150; 6 furlongs: Chief Link 9 0, High Comedy 8.7, Sargon 8.1, Chromadyne 7.7,. King Ford 7.4, Vandyke 7.4, Hampton Paxdc 7.1, Imamint, Golondrina, Werata, Lord Aintree, Baroseope, Cruachan 7.0.
