ECONOMY MEASURES EXTEND TO PRISONERS' EARNINGS NEW ARBITRATION SYSTEM

Wellington, Thursday. Notice of the cancelling of the following awiards was gazetted tonight. (1) Northern industrial labourers, iron workers', (2) Otago and Southland, West and South of the Molyneux River and including Stewart Island, timber yard employees' and sawmillers', (3) North ^industrial district, except Gisborne judicial district, timheryard and sawmill employees', (4) Westland and Canterbury metal workers' assistants. Amended regulations gazetted tonight make provision for a slight economy measure in the direction of reducing prisoners' industrial earnings. Industrial wages which are. paid to prisoners' dependents, and which amount to approximately £10,900 a yeai*, aro not reduced, but a saving of approximately £600 yearly will be effected in the amount paid to the prisoners themselves. The total payments throughout New Zealand in this respeet formerly amounted to approximately £7360 yearly. The effect of the alteration is to reduce the industrial earnings from 3/- to 2/9 a week.
