COMMODITIES PROPOSALS
-By Telegraph — Copvright).
Ottawa, Aug. 17. Tlie prese-nt posltion at the Conference l-egarding the principal commodities is as follows: — Meat. — Australia and New Zealand are urging quantitative restrictions on Argentine beef, also a duty. Britain may yield to a small quota and tlie barga'n nuiy involve the sc: apriing of duty proposals. Wheat. — A preference of two shillings per quarter is probable. The Australian view is that any preference is not of great value, but it would help Canadian farmers slightly. A quota is urged by Canada and Australia as the best method of dealing with the wheat situation, but Britain at present is reluctant to consent. Fruit. — A preference duty — plus six months' closed season in the London market against foreign fruit, will probably be granted. Dairy Products. — It is antic-ipated there will be no British objection to the proposed duties plus quantitative restridtions on foreign butter. Timber. — It is expected that Britain will ir.crease tlie preference on lumber from ten to twenty per cent., but Canada in addition is demanding restrictions upon Russia.
