WANTED POWER AS SOLE DICTATOR OF POL1CY •"SITTING ON BAYONETS"
— By Telegr.-pti — Copyriglit),
BERLIN, Tuesday. That Herr Hitler demanded from President Hindenburg the "same position as Mussolini received after his march on Rome" is now revealed in an authoritative statement, disclosing the inevitability of the President's rejection of the Nazi demands. Official sources dwell on the fact that Hitler and the leaaing Nazis gave a solemn assurance in the presence of witnesses that they would support a National Government enjoying President Hindenburg's confidence. Consequently President Hindenburg and the Government repudiate responsibility for the collapse of the Hitler negotiations. The Government has intimated that the Rcichstag will definitely meet 011 August 30, when (whether
or not by coineiuence is not known) the steel lielmets (ex-;-.oldiers' league, the most efficient and least extreme of the semi-military organisations and closely associated v/ith the present governing group) is assembling 150,000 strong for their annual rally in Berlin. Mean while the outrages have ceased. Hitler has given his storm troops a week's "leave," which is interpreted either as a gesture to suppoi't his denial that he had planned a march on Berlin, or the belief that the disappointed and restive units are better dispersed. Nazi journals declare that nothing will stop the Hitlerites' onward march, adding, "Bayonets may be useful, but the Government cannot sit on tbem permanently."
