THE WEATHER
The Government meteorologist issued the following weather report and forecast last night: — General situation: A deep depression covers New Zealand, its centre being located c-fr th east coast of the South Island. An intense anti-cyclone now envelopes Australia, its centre being 'near Adelaide, where pressure was as high as 30.73 inches at 9 a.m. to-day. Forecast: Winds westerly at first in and north of Cook Strait; elsewhere southerlies, moderate to strong generally and of gale force in places. Weather: Unsttled and squally with showers in most districts, heavy rain in places; hail probable on the coast and o'n high country; temperatures becoming very cold everywhere; conditions Tmproving sbortly in Westland. Following are the barometer, maximum and minimum thermometer, sunshine, and rainfall readings recorded at the Government Observation Station by the Rotorua Tourist Department for the 24 hours ended at 9.30 a.m. yesterday. Barometer .... 29.762ins. Thermometer (max.) 53.7deg. Thermometer (min.) 49.5deg. Thermometer (min. on grass) 47.9deg. Rainfall ....' ." 0.39ins. Bright Sunshine Nil
