"Is there such a thing as nicotineless j tobacco — tobacco with no nicotine in it?" aslced a customer of a Wellington tobac- i conist the other day. "No," said the j tobacconist, "there is not. But there is much less nicotine in some brands than j others." "And is there no way of ex- | tracting the stuff enquired the cus- S tomer, adding, "poisonous, isn't it?" i "It's deadly," replied the tobacconist, and ' continued: "The only way, I believe, is j to roast the tobacco, same as the manu- j facturers of the New Zealand brands are | doing. They have installed an elaborate \ plant in their factory, I'm told for the 1 purpose." "And does the roasting really i get rid of the nicotine?" queried the cus- g§ tomer. "Most of it. Suflieient to make ® it safe for the smoker to indulge to any £| extent. Greatly improves the flavour H and bouquet, too. It's a wonderful pro- Ej cess." Replying to a further question 0 the tobacconist said: "There are only B four brands of toasted: Riverhead Gold, S Cut Plug No. 10, Cavendish and- Navy » Cut No. 3." The customer is "trying ■ them out." B
