FORMER MINISTER called as witness at mechanical hare enquiry EVIDENCE DENIED

— By Telegraph — Copyright).

Rec. Aug. 11, 10.55 p.m. SYDNEY, Thursday. At the mechanical hare inquiry, Mr. J. Tully, former Minister of Lands, denied statements hy Red- | mond and Barry that he had interested himself in tin hare legislation. He } added that he never heard the mat- t ter diseussed by the Lang Cabinet ! of which he was a member. Whenever ; tin hares were mentioned by his con- | stituents, of whom Barry was one, he always referred them to the Chief Secretary's Department, which dealt ; with the matter. Mr. Horsington, member of Parlia- j ment for Broken Ilill, denied having j advised a former witness, Matthews j to see Swindell about a license- for Broken Hill. Referring to Krantz, Horsington | said that Broken Hill had borne him j for 30 y-ears, and if it would stand j him it would stand anything. | J. Robinson, hotel-keeper of Armidale, gave evidence that Swindell told him that it would cost £1300 procuration fee to get a license for j Armidale, which witness said was later modified to £1000, but even this struck him as a "bit over the fence," and he objected. The Royal Commissioner intimated that he did not think Mr. Tully had anything to answer, and relieved him from further proeeedings. The hearing was adjourned.
