BASKETBALL

NOTES ON THE GAME BiG GAME WITH AUCKLAND TRAINING COLLEGE TG-MORROW LAST WEEK'S MATCHES . Conditions were very unpleasant for the continuance of the Rotorua ' Basketball Association's competition | last Saturday. Snow threatened at j 1 o'clock, but had disappeared when ' the teams assembled at 1.45 p.m. The snowman's presence was felt through a biting southerly wind, which swept i across the playing area and through ' its chilling, numbing effect on fingers i and thumbs, was the cause of a fair j amount of fumbling during the garn- 1 es. Waratah v. Kiwi Waratah, an experienced combination had another easy victory over Kiwi. The latter fielded two players short and Waratah sportingly dropped players in order to equalise the sides. Waratah's experience was too strong for their opponents, and the latter, although keen and willing, could not penetrate the defence. Mrs. Guy was referee. i£owhai v. Ngongotaha Although Kowhai inflicted a fairly heavy defeat 011 Ngongotaha, 'the game was not without its bright flaslxes, with Ngongotaha defending sturdiy. The latter team made determined sallies, but could not sustain them. Kowhai were the more evenly balr K-eu ec nibinatlon and deserved their w in. Score, Kowhai 15, Ngongotaha G. Mrs. Walker was referee. H.S.O.S. (A) v. H.S.O.S. (B) Thif was a very close and keenly contestc.l gume. The B team was by no nieans overawod by their senior oppownts, and frorn the outset good 1 lay by both sets of defence kept pmy travelling rapidly from one end of ihe field to the other. Neither forvard thii ds handled particularly well, many comi aratively easy chances to scoie being missed. It was not until the seeonu half that the A team's comI'i.iaiioi: gained ascenuancy and their Fvoi-e gitu.uaily increased to give them a win by 14 goi ls to 9. Mrs. Shearer was referee. To-morrow's B'g Ganie One of the most attractive and pleasant events of the whole basketball season takes place to-morrov/ when the Auckland Training College team piays its annual match with the Ro.: 01 ua repiesentatives. In previous ygars. the college has sent its B team, but this year the A team is making the trip. This team is one of the mo-t outstanding teams in the Auckland province and it is a conrpliment to Rotorua to secure such competition. The game has progressed great - ly this year in Rotorua and the management has shown itself to be keen and alert. The test with Training Codege will be a severe one, and if I'ototua comes out creditably it will signify that the standard of play has kept pace with the improved methods of eontrol. The Training College girls arrive on the express to-day and will be enteitalned at a special dance evening to-night at Brents Bathgate House. On Saturday night they have the choice of the Majestic Theatre or the Majertic Bal'.room. On Sunday there will be a picnic to Lake Olcataina, and on Sunday night a visit to the baths. '${ In the representative match Training College will be represented by the following team: — Pen Davidson, Joan Maxwell, Dulcie Crouch, Maidie Blythe, Jean Gummer, Edith Gray, Eunice Hunt, Natalie° Jacombs, Joyce Stichbury, Daphne Barrett. Rotorua team: — J. Isdale, B. Newmarch, B. Vaughan, R. Steele, D. Davies (captain), E. Hardie, H. Dawson, E. Rushton, M. Ford. Emergency, F. Bates. Notes on The Team J. Isdale deserves her place in the team for to-morrow. Her height is a great asset for goal throwing, and she is always ready when required. B. Vaughan and B. Newmarch, combine excellently on the forward base. The former has been shooting most accurately of late. B. Newmarch plays a good game for her club, and if she maintains this stant.ard will justify her inclusion. E. Ilardie has played a strong game during the competition and is to be congratulated on receiving her rep. honoui'S. H. Dawson, M.-Ford and E. Rushton are some of the best defenders Rotorua have had; Training College will have to worlc hard to evade these fast players. R. Steele is fortunate in gaining a place in thc rep. team so early. She is a heady player and it seems little effort for her to anticipate her opponents' tactics. She will be a great asset to the local team's centre. 1). Davies, who is captain pf the Rotorua team, is an experienced player and should have a thorough grasp of- a captain's duties. F. Bates will make a handy emergency. She is an energetic player and can adapt herself to any position on the field. Executive Meeting At a meeting of the executive held las t Monday evening, arrangements for the entertainment of the Training College team were nnalined. An invitation was received from Opotiki to send a Wednesday team to the Bay. It was decided to accept the invitation and the matter was left to the chairman (Mrs/H. G. Guy) to ' make arrangements. An invitation was received from Thames to send two teams there. It
