DEAD VALET
BELIEVED TO HQLD SECRET OF LOWENSTEIN'S DEATH. Believed to be the only man who knew anything about the mysterious death of Captain Albert Loewenstein, the Belgian millionaire, his former valet, Baxter, by name, has taken the secret with him to the grave. Baxter was found shot dead in the Paris flat of his employer, Mr. Loewenstein's son. By his side were a revolver and an empty liqueur glass. He was a native of Melton Mowbray 1 and was about thirty-five. years of i age. It is suggested that he toolc his j life through money troubles due to a love affair with a woman of higher social position than his own. According to a French newspaper a farewell note left by Baxter to his employer contained the following message : — "I recommend my fritnd Alexander to take my place. Pay him at least three times as much as you gave me. In future don't drive so quickly. It was that that broke my nerves. I spent your Swiss and Belgian money. I am a coward. I have not the courage to face the consequences. Baxter accompanied Captain Loewenstein on his last flight over the Channel in 1928, during which the millionaire disappeared from the aeroplane. Many people believe- that Baxter knew the truth about Loewenstein's death. He never said much about what actually oceurred. All he declared was that his employer left him him to go to another compartment of the aeroplane, and as he did not return after a long time he went to loolc for him, and found a door open and Captain Loewenstein gone. Baxter entered Captain Loewenstein's service nine years ago, and since his death had been employed by his son.
