"WIZARD WANTED"

CANTERBURY RUGBY UNION DOESN'T FANCY ITS TEAM'S FORM. SHIELD HOLDERS CRITICISED. CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. A suggestion that the Canterbury representative Rugby team, especially i'Ls backs, needs much more coaching than its sole se.lector can give it, was made by Mr. E. V. Pfiilnps at iast week's meeting of the Canterbury Rugby Uion's Management Committee. , "I thought that the team, before it started its representative matches, should have some coaching, so that it could go on the field with some sorfc of tactics worked out, as is done in other places in New Zealand," said Mr. Philiips, after remarking that he had first raised the question before tho selector was appointed. "Our t'ellows don't seern to be having any coaching at all." Mr. S. F. Wilson: I thought that Bili Dalley was coaching the backs! " Mr. W. C. Dalley: Bi'il Dalley has never been near them. Mr. Phiilips : Surely we've. got some olu-time backs in Canterbury who could help. Ma Wilson: Mr. Burrows surely would ask for assistance if he wanted it. The chairman (Mr. A. E. McPhail) It's rather a peculiar time to start butting in on him. Mr.' Phiilips: Oh, I'm not butting in on him. But he's got enough to uo in iooking after the forwards. Mr. Dalley: I think that if Jim Burrows wants anyone's help he'll ask for it. Mr. V. L. Jensen: From what I saw of the forwards in the Otago match oa Saturday, you'd better ge.t two or three coaches for the forwards

and not worry too much about the backs. Mr. Phiilips: The trouble with our football to-day is that many players don't do what the coaches tell the.m. Mr. Dalley (smiling) : No team works out its tactics beforehand. Mr. Phiilips: Mr. Burrows knows his job all right, and tells the players what he wants. Mr. J. K. Moloney : They want the will to w.in — that's what they want. Members deprecated the idea of offi cial action, but one or two remarked that there would be no harm in the chairman's having a word with the selector. Mr. Phislips: Don't you think Mr. Burrows has his work cut out for him with the forwards? Dr. W. S. Seed: Too right, he has! Mr. Momney: They want a wizard! No action was taken.
