"ANGEL OF PAMPAS"
DEATH OF WEALTHY ENGLISH WOMAN IN CHILE TOWN An Englishwoman, known far and wide as "the Angel of the Pampas," has died at Antofagasta, the nitrate port in Northern Chile, according to a Reuter message from Valparaiso. The "Angel of the Pampas" was a millionairess, Mrs. Edith Shaw de Marco. She was born in London, and was the widow of a Bolivian mining engineer, who died many years ago in La Paz. Mrs. de Marco, wh'o iniherited her husband's fortune, eontinued to live on the Pacific Coast of South Am'erica, and became famous for her benevolence. Since the war she had given over £100,000 to British and South American charities, including £10,000 to St. Dunstan's. She was a regular visitor among Chilean and British miners on the nitrate fields, and among the Indians mining for silver and washing for gold in Bolivia. Her fortune has been left in equal shares to British, Chilean and Bolivian benevolent activities.
