WINTER SPORTS
ALPINE CIIAMPIONSHIPS AT NATIONAL PARK THIS WINTER. Australia will be represented at this year's winter sports at Tongariro National Park, for which competitors have entered from all parts of the Dominion. From August 12 to August 19 the Alpine Sports Club, Auckland, will hold its annual championships. The Dominion championship meeting of the Federated Mountain Clubs of New Zsaland will commence on August 20 and conclude on September 5. Special spectacular snow jumps have ueen constru_ted at the sports grounds, •a'hich are three miles from The Chai eau. An exhibition will be given by uu.de Olaf, who will leap from a ..nowclad rock face 80 feet high. Many have gained the impression i-hat ski-ing is a sport for the expert only. The joy of winter .sports, however, is that both young and old can join in the fun and frolic. Tongariro National Park is tbe playground of ihe Nor..h Island. It covers an area uf 150,000 acres and is set amid an :xtraordinarily wide variety of scenic attractions of a most striliing and unusual nature. Here appears to have been gathered something of tbe best of all that the Dominion has to offer for the holiday-seeker. Steaming craters, sulphurous pits, a hot lake, ice-cold lakes, glaciers, snowfields, torrents sand bubbling springs, rapids and waterfalls, huge cliffis and rocky pinnacles, and alpine slopes inviting snov/manship are a few of the attractions offered by this great playground. For those inclined to strenuous sport or mountain climbing innumerable opportunities are available.
