ORPHANS' CLUB
YISITING H AMILTONI AN S PROVIDE BRIGKT PROGRAMME LARGEST GATHERING OF YEAR "Banish Care" is the motto of the Rotorua Orphans' Club, and the memhers and their friends certainly actec, up to it on Thursday evening when BrO. T. Kelly presided over what was describod as the largest gathering oi the year. An excellent concert programme was provided by visiting brethren from Hamilton, items being voeiferously encored (especially after supper), wlnlst the orchestra under the baton .of Bro. H. J. F. Heley came in for special commendation from members and visitors alike. The president, Bro. J. M. Roberts, in a moving speech drew the attention of the brethren to the fact thal the date was August 4, the eighteenth anniversary of the outbreak of the World War. He graphically described the rush to arms in all parts of the Empire, on that fateful day, and urged his hearers to emulate the spirit of 1914 in these days of difficulty. The brethren broke into patriotic songs of the early days of the war, led by Bro. Fred Baker. A reminder of the serious side was given when the assembly stood in silence for a moment in memory of those who had fallen on active seryice. Song and story whiled away the evening, and the official welcome to the visiting orphans and tributes to the performers added variety to the programme. Where all items were popular, it would be unfair to individualise, but perhaps the efforts of Bro. Fred Baker met with the most approval. Items were given by Bros. A. Wheeler, Crampton (Yiolin solo), P. Evans, F. Baker, K. Eade, Lentin, McCready, J. Parlane H. Saunders, and A. Grant.
