SECOND BIRTHDAY PARTY The Opotiki branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union celebrated its second birthday with a most enjoyable party in the Farmers' Soeial rooms, which had been tastefully decorated for the occasion. On the various tables set out around the room, were vases of iceland poppies, violets, sweet-peas, jonquils and pansies. Representatives from the Taneatua and Awakeri branches were present. The following very entertaining programme was arranged for the benefit of the guests, Mrs A. E. Martin opening the proceedings by welcoming the visitors. National Anthem; eommunity singing; competition won by Mrs Beattie; song "Until" Miss B. Kelly (accompanied by Mrs C. Hambly ) ; violin solo, Miss D. Wolfe; piano solo, Miss L. Parkinson ; "Tlie Parson's Mistake" Mesdames W. H. Pilkington, C. J. Hollard, R. Lammas; Mr. G. Lysight, humorous item; song "Keep on Smiling", Miss T. Hambly; duet, Messrs F. Wingate and Moore; song, Mrs Fred. Harvey. After a dainty home made afternoon tea had been served by the lady members, Mrs Grace (president of Taneatua) thanlced the Opotiki branch on behalf of the Taneatua Division for the kind invitation given them, and ended by wishing them "Many Happy Returns." The President of Awakeri, Mrs. Haultain, thanked Mrs. Martin and the division also, stating her surprise at the growth of the Opotiki branch which had started with 10 members and had now increased to 80. Mr. R. Ruddick (Taneatua) spoke of this movement in a similar way and jokingly congratulated the good cooks in Opotiki. Mr. A. E. Martin, in a short speeeh on behalf of the local branch of the Women's Division, said that any woman who joined the division became a better wife (laughter) and that was what he wanted (applause). A most successful party was concluded by the singing of "Auld Lang Syne." Among the ladies present were: Mesdames A. E. Martin (president of Opotiki), C. J. Hollard, W. H. Pilkington, W. C.
