A Gilbertian situation arose reeently concernlng a man sontenced to imprisonment for seven days, having to spend six of them travelling to gaol, where he was lodged for a day — then sent back home. The man had b xen ordered at Queenstown to be imprisoned for having failed to maintain his wif?, and the sentence had to be served in IIobart Gaol. This caused some delay, and thr sentence having commenced on Friday, the prisoner was kept in custody until the following Monday, when a start for Hobart was made. Relays of Escorts. A Queenstown officer escorted the offender to Zeehan, where a Burnie man picked him up and took him to Exton. A Launceston officer assumed charge from Exton to Ross, and one from Hobart conducted the final stago of the trip. Hobart was reached on the Tuesday night, and the offender spent the following day in gaol, and was discharged on -Thursday. ±ie was then presented with a ticket for the return journey to Queenstown, and thus the law was satisfied.
