R'ac. August 2, 7.15 p.m. LOS ANGELES, Tuesday. Scarf, the Australian suffered his first defeat to-day, and three bad points were registered against him. It takes five bad points for elimination. Scarf, therefore, is still in the running, but his chances are reduced. Gray, Australia, gained another victory to-night in the third heat of the 1000 metre scratcli cycling race, beating Gevin, Denmark. Gray won nicely by a wheel. THE 200 METRES In the 200 metres, three in each heat are to qualify for the semi-final to be run on Wednesday. Results of the heats were: — First Heat: Mexted 1, Walters (S.
Africa) 2, Broclcmeyer (Germany) 3. Time 21.5sec, a new Olympic record. Second heat. Tolan (U.S.A.) 1, Peai'son (Canada) 2, Genta (Argentina) 3. Time, 21.5 sec. equalling the record. Third Heat: Luti (Argentina) 1, Simpson 2, Joubert (S. Africa) 3-. Time 21.4, a new Olympic record. Black (N.Z.) was fifth. Fourth heat: Jonath (Germany) 1, White (Canada) 2, Elliott (New Zealand 3. Time 21.4 equalling the new record. Elliott, in the fourth heat, led the Canadian, White, for second place, until within six inches of the finish. He was beaten by two inches. Half a yard separated White from Jonath, equalling the new record. Elliott's time was well over the old Olympic record. In the first heat of the 5000 metres the placings were: Hill 1, Lithunen (Finland) 2, Lindgren (Finland) 3, Virtanen (Finland) 4, Savidan (N.Z.) 5, Hillhouse (Australia) 6.
