Boarders and Bylaws Two boardinghouse proprietors wrote last night to the Rotorua Borough Gouncil complaining that some of the unlicensed houses in the town were evading bylaws and thereby enteriiig into unfair competition with those larger houses which were compelled to comply with the law. It was resolved that the general committee look into the question and report. Local Track Work. There is not much track-work at present on the Rotorua Raeing Club's course, but this morning the Mama-ku-owned Taupapa who i's down to compete at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting on August 20, went a couple of rounds with a medium weight on top. He was not out after time, but moved very attractively, and should _ be in good order for his engagements. Little Bnilding Building permits to the value of £280 were issued hy the Rotorua Borough Council during the last three weeks. Hospital Levy The Rotorua Borough Council has been notified that the Waikato Hospital 'Board's levy for the year is £986 8s 7d. Cr. G. Urquhart stated that the council's contribution this year would he about £10 more than last year, but the rate had not been increased. The increase was due to valuation. Did Not Take The Car. An Auckland business man who contemplated taking his motor car with him on a visit to Australia has changed his mind. Fortunately, he took the precaution of writing to the Collector of Customs at Sydney, asking what the duty on the car would be. In the particulars supplied he stated that the car was valued at only £60. He received a reply stating that the duty for a car with sedan body was £210, and for a car with doubleseater tourer body £164. Cycle Road Race A request was received from the Rotorua Cycling Club by the Borough Council for permission to hold a road race from Mourea along Te Ngae Road and Fenton Street on Saturday next. Cr. Coleman urged that there was danger in permitting racing on the Mourea Road. There were sharp bends which would prevent riders from seeing approaching motor cars. Accidents would occur. The mayor pointed out that the Mourea Road was outside the jurisdiction of the council. The request was granted subject to the supervision of the traffic inspector. Condolence Before proceeding with the ordinary business of the Rotorua Borough Council last night, the Mayor, Mr. T. Jackson, moved a motion of regret at the death of Mrs. Clinkard, wife of Mr. C. H. Clinkard, M.P. for Rotorua. The resolution was passed in silence, members standing. Secretary Dispensed With. As a direct result of the recent strike and the inroads made into its membership by the Tramway Traffic Employees' Association and dismissals the Cristchurch Tramway Employees' Union has been compelled to dispense with the services of a permanent secretary. Father of Highways Funds. A claim that he was the originator of the present system of highways finance was made by the ActingMinister of Public Works, the Hon. C. E. Macmillan, in replying to a deputation recently. He said that from his first speech in Parliament in 1923 he had advocated the introduction of the petrol tax being applied to highways purposes. He thought the motorists had received value for the money spent out of the "petrol fund for road construction and other purposes.
