DINNER COMEDY
FAMOUS GUEST'S PORT. This is the story of a comedy of errors which occurred at a' West End (Lyndon) dinner recently. It was ar excellent dinner. Coclctails were srrved. The appropriate wines accompanied the courses, and everything vvent happily until a distinguished guest — one of the great ones of the diplomatic world — stood up to spealc Instead of the witty pleasantries vvhich the occasion demanded, the speaker said everything he should not have said. Other speakers followed in the same indiscreet vein. The majority of the diners gaspcd and shook their heads sadly. Then the head waitm realised whai had happened. A number of specially large glasses had been filled with a rare old port of great value and extrenre potency instead of with burgundy! But it was too late — most of them were empty! Ut is perhaps all to the good that the victims' memorier of that evening are not too vivid.
