(Press. Assn.—
NO HOSTILITY INTENDED IN S. AFRICAN STATEMENT i HIGH HOPES " FOR SUCCESS
-By Telegraph — Copyright).
OTTAWA, Tuesday. It is expected the conference when it resumes to-morrow will eontinue its rapld progress, but norte of the vital issues can reach the decisioh point in this short week, which will close on Thursd'ay. The newspapers wrongly describe Mr. Havenga's statement yesterday as "the first of discord" because he feferretl to the trade position in relation to gold as stated in Mr. Baldwin's document as "clearly fallacious." The South Afripans do not intend their arguments to be construed as cohtaining tbe slightest bint of hosiility, but merely as a desire for the Union's trade position to be seen in a truer perspective. Mr. Neville Chamberlain, review- ' ing the proceedings to date, statsd toi day that he cherishes the highest ' hopes of the successful outcome. i | Canada has not yet disclosed fully ; the concessions she is willing to grant | to Britain. The wheat.policy is still ! undecided, but it is believed Mr. Benj nett will adhere to his request, see- : ing this is part of tbe preferenee for | pork and bacon, which would stimulate the pig industry and represents all the Prime Minister could offer Western farmers, because whatever Canada may ask, Australia will give it solid backing, inasmuch as tlie Commonwealth is not making wh'eat one of its main planks. The British and Dominion Government officials eontinue their examination of the butter, meat and fruit proposals, Messrs. Richardson and McDougall representing Australia and Messrs Craig and Campbell, New Zealand.
