NEW ZEALANDERS QUALIFY IN MEN'S AND YfOMEN'S 100 METRES ELIMINATED IN SEMI-FINALS The main events at the third day sessions of the Olyxnpic games were the men's and womien's 100 metres. tn the men's event, Elliott (N.Z.) ran fifth in the first seml-finol, while in the women's event, Miss Tlielma Kench (N.Z.), after qualifying in her heat, was eliminated. in the semi-linals. Tolan (U.S.A.) won the final of the men's 100 metres in 10.3 :sec, equalling the w'orld's record. Wlth six men's track field events completed, the United States team is leading on points. Tisdall " (Britain) won the 400 metres hurdles, breaking the world's record.

Following were the third day results: — WOMEN'S 100 METRES (Three in each heat qualifying) First Heat: Marie Dollinger (Germany) 1, Wilhelmina von -Bremen (United States) 2, Ililda Strike (Canada) 3, Gwendoline Porter (Britain) 4, Marjorie Clark (South Africa) 5. Time 12.2ssc, equalling the Olympic record. Stella Walsh (Poland) won her heat in 11.9sec, breaking the world record by one-tenth of a second. Second Heat: Stella Walsb (Poland) 1, Mary Frizzcll (Canada) 2, Sumiko Watanabe (Japan) 3, Elizabeth Du-j mee (Holland) 4. Tim'e, ll.9sec. 400 METRES HURDLES Tisdall (Ireland) won the 400 metre hurdle final, brealring Taylof's world record of 52 sec by one-fifth of a second, but he knocked over one burdle and was unable to claim the record. Hardin (U.S.A.) was second, Taylor (U.S.A.) third, and Lord Burghley (England) fourth. Facelli (Italy) was fifth. In the final of the 400 metres hurdles Tisdall won, winning the race from the start. His timing was so perfect that it was clear his stride must carry him to victory, and had he not knocked over the last hurdle his 51 3-10sec would have been a new world's .•pcord. Lord Burgbley was fast overtaking Hardin and Taylor who were both running in second and third places, but the Englishman went out of step and was compelled to relinquish the possibility of being placed. He finished fourth, with Facelli a j disappointing fifth. Hardin's time of j 52sec was allowed.
