A record catch of scbnapper in the Hauraki Gulf is reported by the Thames Star. When the crew of a fishing launch pulled their seine net , aboard they found they had secured 80 baskets of fish. Each hasket holds 1001b. of fish, so the haul may be looked upon as exceptional. No Lambs Yet. Reports indicate that new season's lambs have not yet made their appearance in the Rotorua district, but may be expected very shortly. The weather hitherto has been , very favourable for larfibing. The frosts have been severe, but there has been an absence of cold rain and winds. Hotel Change. After holding the license of the Palace Hotel on two separate occasions Mr. P. Kinninmont has resigned his position, and the house was handed over to the new manager, Mr, H. W. Saunders, on Monday. Mr. Kinninmont was exceptionally popular with both townspeople and the travelling public, and it will be learned with pleasure that he will continue to reside in Rotorua. Stock Beisig ImporieA Numbers of heifers, mostly Jerseys and grade Jerseys, are arriving in Rotorua both by road and rail. There are evidently the nucleus of futuro dairy herds and foreshadow increased activity in the production of dairy products in the forthcoming season.
Destruction of Sheltei* Beit. Attention has been drawn in the past of the actions of the Railway Department in eutting down a number of the, eucalypts growing on railway property# near the station, but unfortunately without any apparent result. Furfher destruction is in progress at the present time; more trees being felled. It seems out of all reason that this fine shelther belt which adds so mueh to the natural beauty of the town should be further depleted. Racing Broadcasts. It was announced last night that the New Zealand Broadcasting Board has made an agrcement with the Racing and Trotting Conferences to broadcast a description of race meetings heltl in the four principal eentres of New Zealand. The first occasion on which this will operate will be the Grand National meeting in Christchurch on August 9, 11, and 13, when 3YA will give a running description of the whole meeting. In addition, the other YA stations will relay the principal events on each day. At present it is anticipated that only the four principal centres will be relayed for racing and trotting meetings, but it is quite on tbe cards that important meetings in otlier centres will be included in the very near future.
Manure Shed Nearly Completed The new manure store in the Rotorua railway yards is now close to eomp'letion, a start having been made in applying the final coat of paint to the building. Viewing the one completed wall, cream with brown facings, some idea can now be gained of thi app'aarance of the building when finished. There is no doubt that the decision of the Railway Board to use these colours has removed many objections to the erection of the shed. Generous Gift A lady visitor from America who has become interested in the endeavour to form a strong swimming club ; in Rotorua has very generously don- i ated to the club, through the swim- j ming coach, Mr. J. B. Perrin, two | j sterling silver cups to be competed for j by junior swimmers during the coming season. The cups will be handed to the Rotorua Swimming Club at its next meeting, when the conditions of eompetition for the tronhies will be decided upon.
