WORLD TOUR

COUPLE'S LONG WALIC IN WOODEN SHOES. ROUEN (France), July 1. "Around the World in Sabots" is the title of a hook which Mr. and Mrs. Esc van Hassel, of The Hague, expect to write after they have completed their globe-trotting touri — about five years from now. So far, they have completed about one per cent. of their voyage, having left The Hague last September. They travel entirely by foot, wearing Dutch wooden shoes, and make an average of 15 miles a day. They have already visited Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Antwerp, Brussels, Lille, Roubaix, Amiens, Paris and Rouen. Their itinerary in France will include visits to Le Havre, Deauville, Lisieux, Cherbourg, Mont St. Michel, Dinard, Brest, Lorgat, La Rochelle, Bordeaux and Marseilles. Africa, America and Asia will follow, and the van Hassels expect to return to The Hague in 1937 or thereabouts. They are both attired in the Dutch national costume, which attracts much attention as they plod along the Normandy highway s. Passing automobilists often offer to "give them a lift," hut to date the van Hassels have scorned all such temptations; they want to see the world afoot and all mechanical means (except for crossing the oceans) are barred.
