Rec. July 31, 5.5 p.m. PARIS, Saturday. In the Davis Cup doubles, Allison and- Van Ryn beat Cochet and Brugnon, 6—3, 11-13-, 7—5, 4—6, 6—4. Twelve thousand spectators were present. The Americans, spurred by previous defeats, started like tornados, jumping to the net and volleying. They overwhelmingly retained the initiative, and compelled their opponents to lob frequently. lay was faultless up to 2—0 in the second game, after which France penetrated Allison's service. Though Cochet was erratic, he held his own in spectacular volleying. At 2 — 4, he achievcd a brilliant succession of interceptions at the nct, putting the ball out of reach with unanswerable flicks of the wrist. Brugnon won his service and led 8 — 7, but Van Ryn was saving splendidly and evened to 10 — 10. Through Brugnon's smashes and Cochet's sledge hammer drives, they won the set. The Americans were somewhat subdued, but won the third owing to the apparent casualness of Cochet. The Frenchmen maintained their initial lead in the fourth. Brugnon was the best of the four. The Americans made a supreme effort in the final set and led fivo three. The Frenchmen worked up to fourfive, but the Americans won after brilliant duelling of point blank range.
