SUGGESTED INTERVENTION OF CHURCHES IN IRELAND
(Press Assn.-
— By Telegraph — Copyright)
LOND-ON, Wednesday. The Pope has not replied to Mr Lansbury's suggestion for mediation in the Anglo-Irish dispute. The Archbishop of Cantei'bury has expressed willingness to co-operate with the heads of other churches, but suggests that Mr. Ramsay MacDonald has done all possible to persuade Mr de Valera to be reasonable. The president of the Free Church
Couneil considers intervention at present inadvisable, and the Chief Ralxbi deprecates action. Mr Lansbury has replied expressing extreme disappointment at the attitude of the eeclesiastics and requesting reconsideration of the decision, adding that economic war is a terrible weapon and may lead to more devastating consequences. He- urges that all three should consider asking Mr MacDonald and Mr de Yalera to discuss the matter. By the application of religious prineiples they should be able to find a way out hetween Ireland's wish for a free choice and England's desire for a limited choice of arbitrators.
