MORE INTERFERENCE

i Althougli he was somewhat cryptic in his phraseology, the Minister for Tourist and Health Resorts (Eon. Adam Hamilton) during his recent visit to Rotorua, gave a definite indication that more Government interference in business is to be expected. There are already so many directions in which the Government competes with and restricts private enterprise, that it is a little difficult to foresee exactly from what directionp, the next encroachments may proceed. The latest and greatest instanee, of course, is the transport regulations, which have placed a further burden upon i private transport companies in order to bolster up railway revenue. That, at least, is the main purpose of the Transport Act, however it may be disgui, sed. It is interesting to hear a prediction of more Government in business from such a staunoh Reform henchmen as Mr. Hamilton, one of the many who marched hehind the "Coates and Confidence" banner with its subsidiary pennant of "more business in Government and less Government in business." The change is typical of the shifting political scene, but that f act does not render it any the less necesi sary for the business and pro- ' ducing community to safoguard I its interests against further Government interference. Even on the pretext of emergency and abnormal times, the Goverr.menfcwill find it extremely difficult fco justify further encroachment j upon the preserves of priv^Ie j enterprise, and from whatever ' quarter this encroachment may come, it will most certainly be stoutly resisted. This country is already overburdened with a surfeit of Government; what is needed is less Government and a greater measure of freedom to , develop individual enterprise and ! initiative.
