JAZZ KING REDUCES
PAUL WHITEMAN LOWERS WEIGHT EIGHT STONE IN ONE YEAR. "A TRAVELLING CAVITY." Mr. Paul Whiteman, the American "jazz king," says he never felt better in his life, yet he has performed a feat from which even the most ardent feminine lover of slimness might shrink. He has reduced his 21st. 61b. of too, too solid flesh to 12st. 61b. within a year. Love for a film star, Miss Margaret Livingstone, persuaded him to this heroic effort. When he wished to marry her early last year she replied, "I love your ideas, but I could never marry a fat man." When they were married six months later Mr. Whiteman had reduced his weight from 21st. to 17st. He declared that his experiences at first resembled those of a man trying to rid himself of the habit of taking drugs. Alcohol was strictly forbidden, although champagne used to be one of his chief delights. "I was a travelling cavity," he said, "always hungry and never sleeping at nights." His wife is writing a book entitled "The First lOOlbs. are the Hardest," which will contain the dietary instructions followed by her husband. His menu was: — Breakfast. — Coffee without cream or sugar; toast, raw cereal, orange juice. Luncheon. — Salad arid fruit.
