HALF-CASTE PROBLEM
POLICY OF INTER-MARRIAGE WITH WHITES SHOWS SUCGESS. NO THROW-BACKS NOTED. ADEAIDE, July 9. Accoi'ding to Darwin doctors thei'e have been no "throw-baeks" as a result of the policy of marrying halfcastes to one another and th'e surplus to whites in a plan to solve the halfcaste problem. In these mixed marriages, they say, the dark pigmentation appears to be superficial and to eventually disappear. Dr. A. Grenfell Price, master of St. Marks' College, who studied the problem of the economic future of the aboi'jgines and their relation to white settlers intends to use this iiiformation when he goes to America. "This problem," said Dr. Price, "is more important and far greater than is generally realised. There are 19,500 aborigines in the Northern Territory, 800 half-castes, and 700 yellow people, to about 2400 whites, "The Bleakley report of 1929 advocated the extension of native reservations and higher remuneration for half-castes and aboi'iginuls. Darwin is now putting this policy into practice. Oiie method is to raise rying them to one another and to* whteis. "But there is difficulty in giving half-castes to white standard by maraborigines and half-castes higher remuneration, for North Australia is facing sueh a gravfe economic problem that to raise the wages of half-castes and aborigines might force pastoralists off the land. "Another great problem of North Australia is the future of the White Australia policy. This depends largely on the pioneer work of white women. "Some Darwin people consider that changes in cooler climates, but many white women have lived in the north white women must have periodic continuously, as "Was experienced in Queensland. "White women, given proper faeilities, would prosp'er there if temperamentally suited to the efli. "From this it looks as if the White Australia policy may meet with success up north.
