WELLINGTON, Tuesday. Thomas Daniel Meehan, a member of the crew of the Maunganui, which arrived from Sydney, was caught leaving the wharf with t'en half pound tins of opium, valued at approximately £200. He was fined £125 in default six months' imprisonment, on a charge of importing opium. Meehan said that he acted as a runner and his share of the proceeds was £1 per tin of the consignment landed. He said that he had previously landed one lot of ten tins. He was allowed a fortnight in which to find the money, upon catering into a bond of £150 and oue surety of £150.
