Not Enough Birds. Contending that Rotorua had not had a fair allocation, Mr. A. E. Meredith, of the local Rod and Gun Club, informed the Minister of Internal Affairs on Monday that only 40 pheasants had been liberated in this area last year, compared with 300 in the Tauranga county alone. This, he thouglit was not by any means enough. High School Leases. The question of the renewal of ten leases which fall due within the next 12 months was discussed at the meeting of the Rotorua High School Board on Monday evening. To deal with the matter a special committee was set up consisting of the chairman, Mr. R. B. Nesbitt, Dr. Bertram, and Mr. H. A. Goudie. which will negotiate with the lessees. Close Season for Deer Suggested. A close season for deer in the Rotorua district was suggested by Mr. A E. Meredith, of the Rotorua Rod and Gun Club, when he addressed the Hon. A. Hamilton on Monday on behalf of the license holders of the district. He said that deer were getting pretty scarce and that he for one, had had some difficulty in finding any. Mr. Meredith contented that the license holders should have some voice in the control of acclimatisation affairs in the district and suggested a committee of six being set up, three members to represent the license holders, two Government nominees, and the Conservator as chairman. Rugby Protests Decided. Two protests were decided hy the Rotorua Rugby Sub-Union at Monday evening's meeting, the action of the Rotoiti team in playing unregistered players causing a decision to replay the match against Hikuwai and the Ngongotaha A juniof team losing the match against Old Boys' B. as a result of fielding a senior player of another club. It was stated that owing to the possible disbanding of the Horohoro team, elubs were including its members in their teams without a transfer having been obtained. This is not permissible until definite advice of the disbanding of the Horohoro team is reeeived. Dwindling Fishing Areas. The serious statement that owing to the encroachment of Government forest reserves and private purchases of land, fishing possibilities were steadily dwindling around Rotorua, was made by Mr. A. E. Meredith, who waited upon the Minister of Internal Affairs (Hon. A. Hamilton), on Monday. Mr. Meredith said that the area available on the lake shore was steadily being encroached upon by private owners, who would not allow the general public to utilise their land to fish from, and unless something* were done there would soon be no areas left to fish from at all. and any fishing would have to be done from launches. Refreshing to Hear. "We are quite satisfied with our allocation," said Mi\ H. Dani'el, secretary of the Rotorua unemployed, to the Minister for Employment, the Hon. A Hamilton, on Monday, "but there are cases of distress and we want to help them without having recourse to charity." Th'e Minister: "My word. It's refreshing to hear of someone who is satisfied with the allocation. There- is one thing quite certain; Rotorua unemployed are doing very good work indeed." Mr. Daniel took advantage of the opportunity to ask the Minister, in his capaeity as Minister of Internal Affairs, to grant the Rotorua Relief Workers' Association permission to run an art union, and reeeived a sympathetic reply.
