HALF-CROWNS FOR PENNIES
A 13-year-old boy was stated at Saltash (Devon) recently to have defrauded clergymen by telling that he had placed a half-crown in the collection in mistake for a penny. One clergyman returned 2s 6d, telling the boy to put 2d in the plate the following Sunday. A second gave him 2s 5d. The lad told them that the money belonged to an old woman who was destitute. When the m&gistrates ordered the boy to be sent to an industrial school the mother exclaimed: "It will break my heart. He is an officer's son and a gentleman's son."
