WELLINGTON, Monday. ! With the object of endeavouring to establish a uniform system of the cost of roads throughbut New Zealand, and to arrange for the collection of traffic statistics as a basis for j the proper study of roading problems, | a conference is to open in Wellington j on Wednesday morning j Those invited to .participate in the conference, which is being Convened on hehalf of the committee of the Society of Civil Engineers, include representatives of the Publie Works Department, Main Highways Board,
Iransport Board, Audit Department, the Instituta of County Clerks and County Engineers. Early this year the Committee of Civil Engineers, of which Mr. Toogood was the convenor produced a comprehensive report on the roading problems in New Zealand in the light of modern data, compiled in this country and overseas. The forthcoming conference is largely tbe result of conclusions reached in this report. j "Except for the purpose of some development scheme, no road improvement work is justified unless such work is economically sound," states the introduction to the Committee's report, "To the farmer it must mean cheaper transport Tor products of the land; to the motorist lower operating | costs than would obtain in existing j circumstances and to the general pub- j lic, it must offer some improvement in : amenity, and less risk to life and i limb."
