BANK'S SECRET DAY
Secrets Day at the Bank of England was observed a few weeks ago. The head of each department delivered to his staff the annual lecture on the rules and regulations. No member of the staff may gamble and any serious breach of moral law may be punished by dismissal. Even the clothes of the staff are subject to regulation. "Loud" colours, whether in suits, shirts, or ties, are banned. The men have gained permission, after a struggle, to wear plus-fours, but a scoutmaster who one day came to worlc in his uniform found he had gone too far. Women on the staff must "comport themselves as ladies," outside the office as when at work. They must always wear a darlc blue overall, which must not be shorter than seven inches from the ground, and the only adornment permitted is a white collar, "without a pattern." Each woman gets one of these overalls on the day she joins the staff, and it is renewed on every anniversary.
