OPERATION SAYES LIFE. A man shot through the heart was snatched from death in Vienna Main Hospital recently by an operation performed by Dr. Oppolzer, the assstanit house surgeon. The patient, a clerk named Hans Schmidt, had attempted suicide, firing a shot which passed right through his heart and lodged in the pericardium. When he reached the hospital he was apparently dead. An immediate operation was undertaken. First the heart was sewed up at the points of -entry and exit and then the bullet was removed from the pericardium. Half an hour later it was certain that the young man's life was saved. He is now making good progress.
