in witness box ADMITS BACKED STATE LABOUR PARTY'S ADVERTISING BILL "MOTIVES OF GRATITUDE"

Rec. July 22, 7.0 p.m. SYDNEY, Friday. At the meclianical hare inquiry, Frederick Shaver Swiridell, a prominent figure in the greyhound racing world, entered the witness hox and was questioned about £6000 received from Mr. Bo'oth. Mr. Swindell said he paid £3100 for the State Labour Party advertising, and had agreed to back the Labour Party advertising bill during the Pederal election. Swindell admitted that greyhound racing was legalised a day or two after. Swindell went on to say that the amount of the grant to the Labour Party, which had no money, was made out of "gratitude." He said he, sat for many months on the doorstep of Mr. Mark Gosling, but accomplished nothing Mr. Gosling was former chief secretary. The £3000 paid for advertising was paid to Mr. Mc'Cauley, director of the party's advertising. Mr. MeCauley was the private secretary of the ex-Pre-mier, Mr. J. T. Lang. Swindell was questioned at length about his association with greyhound racing and the allegations made by the previou's witnesses. He denied telling anybody that "J.T." meanin'g Mr Lang, had insisted that he - should have three seats on the board of a certain coursing club, and he h^id made no xeference concerning Mr. Lang to anyone.
