FRENCH CORNERED
AMERICAN CARS IMPORTED WITHOUT PAYMENT OF DUTY. PARIS, June 28. The French police are investigating allegations that large numbers _ of American motor cars have been imported without payment of the high Customs duties. These frauds are believed to have been carried on undetected for four years, involving the loss of hundreds of thousands of pounds to the Treasury. It was announced this afternoon that the examining magistrate, M. Pages, in whose hands the inquiry has been placed, has op'ened proceedings against "a person or persons unknown" for fraud. For the moment, however, no arrests are anticipated. It is declared that — contrary to certain reports— there is so far no indication that French Customs officials have been guilty of corruption. The temptation to introduee foreign, and especially American car, into France without payment of the dues is very great, for these dues are high, and many foreign makes are popular in this country. It is suggested that means have been found of getting the vehicles past the Customs barrier at Havre and possibly elsewhere duty free.
