POLICE KILLED

RAID TJPON POST OFFICE LEADS TO REVOLVER BATTLE. ONE BANDIT ARRESTED. PARIS, June 1. ! Three police inspectors were killed j while defending a post office against bandits at Marseilles. Information that a raid had been planned on the post office at St. Barnabe, a populous suburb, was received some time ago by the police, and for several weeks a speeial guard was posted at the office. About 6 o'clock last evening three inspectors were stationed as nsual in the inner office when four individuals wearing cloth caps entered by the main door. Their appearance immediately aroused the suspicions of the only employee present, a young woman clerk, Mlle. Reynaud, aged 19, who rushed into the other room to warn the police. As the bandits prised open the door they were nrat by a fusillade, to which they responded with their revolvers. About a dozen shots were exchanged, the three police all receiving mortal wounds. One of them, however, in spite of being wounded in the stomach and the face, clung to his adversary until police reinforcements arTived. The accomplice wh'o had rexnained in charge of the car drove off at the sound of the first shot. When assistance arrived one inspactor was already dead. The other two died shortly after being taken to hospital. Thanks to the heroism of the defenders, the bandits took nothing. As happens every Thursday, a large sum of money had just been paid into the post office by the local branch of the Credit Lyonnaise. The bandits were evidently aware of this fact. At the moment they broke in one of the inspectors was telephoning to headquarters to make arrangements for guarding the money. The name of the prisoner is Louis Manzini, and his capture should greatly facilitate the pursuit of the others. Though seriouslv wounded, he was immediately submitted to a long crossexamination, which lasted into the small hours of the morning, when he became too exhausted to answer questions. The examination was resumed at 9 a.m.
