DELPHIC ORACLE'S TEMPLE
j TUMBLED STONES REMAIN. j In one of the lovely vales of Greece there are ruins of the temple in which I the Deplhic oracle once made her forej casts. All that remains of the once ' beautiful buildings are some tumbled j stones. The Delphic oracle, whose j prophecies were made in connection ' with' the worship of Apollo, was at first a maiden, but in alter yeat s a woman more than 50 years of age was generally selected for this duty. She would take her place upon the sacred tripod, and written que'stions would be submitted to her. Her answers would be transposed into verse and edited by the professional prophets before being given out to the people. At Delphi there was also the Omphalos, a sacred stone which was supposed to mark the earth's centre. In more reeent times the site of Delphi was occupied by the village of Castri, but in 1891 it was bought by the French Government. Systematic excavations were begun at once, and since that time many important discoveries have been made.
