WAIKATO PROSPERITY
INFLUENCE OF RAILWAY ON TRAFFIC AND WAGES. The infiiience oi the Railway Board's operations on the prosperity of the Waikato was referred to by Mr. A. W. Wellsted, chief clerk of the comercial branch', at a meeting of the Hamilton Rotary Club. Mr.* Wellsted stated that one Waikato company had handled 47,000 tons of fertiliser during the last year The board's ability to charge low rates for fertilisers and coal, two of the heaviest commodities transported by rail in the Waikato, was governed by the quantity of higher-rated traffic it carried, and the amount of this was in turn governed by the quantities carried by competing road transport. Mr. Wellsted said railway employees at Frankton and Hamilton received £80,000 a year in wages, and all of this sum was spent in the borough of Hamilton. He made an appeal for support for th'e railways, and added that when this service paid its way, part of New Zealand's economic problems would be solved.
