PROTEST AGAINST CAMP CONDITIONS AT RUAWARO.
-By Telegraph — Copyright)
HUNTLY, Thursday. The relief workers in the single men's camp at Ruawaro have ceased work following a meeting of protest regarding camp conditions. On Tuesday the men interviewed Mr. F. S. Dyson, district engineer at Auckland, and Mr. W. Hall Jones, assistant district engineer of the Public . Works Department, who refused to entertain their requests. The men's requests, as detailed by one of their elected representatives, * include a desire for an increase in the sugar, butter and fresh vegetables rations, as these, they state, are hopelessly inadequate. No complaints have been made in regard to the quality or coolcing of the food. A fireplace and flooring are wanted in the dining-room. The room is open for recreation in the evening, the only place the men have for the purpose, but at present is far too cold to stay in and is decidedly uneomfortaBle at meal times, especially at 6.30 a.m. breakfast on these raw mornings. An adequate drying shed is wanted to dry working clothes, as the men are engaged on swamp work at which they are nearly constantly wet. Efficient sanitary arrangernents are needed in place of the present primitive makeshift. The latter two items are necessary for the health of the workers. The men are awaiting a represen-j tative of the Labour Department wha will examine the camp. | t
