To the Editor. Sir, — I see, according to your report, that the Government has refused permission to erect a new theatre in Rotorua. Now, sir, this seems to me another glaring example of too much Government intsrference in private business. According to the same ruling it would be quite the correct thing for the grocers to ask the Government not to allow any further compeition in Rotorua. All tliey would need to do would be to apply1 for "an Order-in-Council," and the whole matter would be settled. It seems to me that it would be more in keeping l'or the Government to assist in putting more competition in business, and in that way help to secure a better article at a cheaper price for the people as a whole. Then, there is the aspect that in acting as they have, they are not assisting the finemployment question I am quite sure that the erection of this neW theatre would be very acceptable to contractors and workers alike, both as regards material and work. You say in your report that an officer of the department came to Rotorua to collect evidence. I would suggest, sif, that he only loolced for thiS from one source. Hoping that some abler pen than mine will take up the question of more competition in business, which is in the interests of th'e greater number. — I am,etc.,
