DEER SHOOTING
WELLINGTON SPORTS SUPPORT VIEWS EXPRESSED JN . ROTORUA. LICENSES ADVISABLE. Sportsmen in the Rotorua district will be interested to know that the opinions recently expressed by the president of the Rod and Gun Club, Mr. H. R. Jones, regarding the indiscriminate shooting of dear, have been endorsed by the game committee of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society. Landowners, the committee stated, agreed that the present method of dealing with the deer question was quite in'effective. They said that owing to the "open slather" methods, the result was that irresponsible mobs of youths roam upon their land without permission and disturb their flocks and herds, thereby cansing considerable damage. It was stated that the inexperience of these trespassers had the effect of frghtening the deer into the forest, where they remained, and consequently did greater damage to the forest than they would otherwise do. The committee recommended that the Internal Affairs Department be approached and asked, in view of the satisfaetory state of the position in in the Wellington society's district, that proteetion be reimposed. It was further recommended that only holders of stalking and game shooting licenses, together with special permitholders and landowners, should be allowed to cull deer in the Wellington district. This, said the committee, in the opinion of those competant to judge, was the most effective method of keeping their deer in check. The report was adopted.
