SLANDERS ON N.Z

(Press. Assn.-

\ ' canadian press "chief industries, rioting, unemployment and extravagance" STATEMENT BY MR. COATES

-By Telegraph — Confyright).

Rec. July 19, 7.0 p.m. "" OTTAWA, Monday. Members of the New Zealand Qttawa Conference delegation claim that derogatory reference to their country has been made in Canadian newspapers. The Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, issued a statement to the Canadian press deprecating the suggestion that jNew Zealand's chief industries are unemployment, riots, and financial extravagances. Mr. Coates said that unemployment is inevitable markets, and even a country lilce in view of the condition of the world's New Zealand could not escape. The entire damage du-e to the riots did not exceed £15,000. New Zealand was undoubtedly facing financial stringency, but she had wisely accumulated reserves sufficient to tide over the crisis. The estimated deficit was only £2,000,000. There had been only four occasions in the past 40 years when New Zealand had had a deficit. New Zealand might be considered a comparatively small and unimportant Dominion, but she had no small opinion of herself so far as determination to co-operate with other parts of the Empire was concerned.
