LADIES' HOCKEY

FORM IMPROVES U SHAMROCKS NARROWLY WIN AGAINST -TANIWHA TEAM. '• .j MAMAKU AND HINEMOA DRAW. The Kotorua Ladies* Hockey A^sociation,'S competition matehes were continued on Saturday in ideal weather and two closely contested ganies were witnessed. t The first gaine, betw.een Mamaku and Hinemoa showe.d a great improvement in the play pf. both teams, and the final result, ■ one' goal to eaqh team, was a fair indication of the play of the teams. . Avenging their def eat at the hands of Taniwha in the Robertson Cup final, Shamrocks played a great game against the same team and won the match by the only goal scored during the contest. - It, is pleasing to see that the form of all • teams is-now improving and that eyen games are resulting from the alloeation of grades. RESULTS AT A GLANCE. . A Grade. Shamrocks 1 goal, beat Taniwha 0. Arawa defanlteduto Reporoa. B Grade. Mamaku 1, drew with .Hinemoa 1. Shamrocks' Victory. .-. At the comrnencement of their j game with Taniwha, Shamrocks quickly took the offensive and held play in the red and black twentyfive for some time. Several times they were .within strildng distance pf the Taniwha goal, but the baeks were safe and averted .the danger. Retaliating • attacks by the Taniwha f orwards gaihed ground, but were generally of short duration, the Shamrock halves and backs combining well. Inaccurate shooting by the Shamrock forwards spoilt several chances, and from others N. Hihi, the Taniwha goalkeeper saved in a spectacular manner. ,T. Wharekura instituted an attack for Taniwha which saw play transferred to the Shamrock circle, but the backs rallied round and averted the danger. , The first goal resulted from . a spirited attack by the Shamrock forwards, who were being well backed up by the half line, play being taken to the -Taniwha twenty-five where a hard shQt touched a defender ,in the circle and crossed the line. From the resulting penalty corner, T. Mitchell secured and found the net with a hard shot. From the resumption, Shamrocks again attacked and mostly held the territorial advantage until half time ,was called. Taniwha Brighten Up. Play in the early part of the second spell was distinctly in fayour of Taniwha, and the Shamrock backs had to defend strenuously for some time. However, on the few occasions when the red and black forwards did penetrate the defence, wild goal shooting robbed them of many chances, and penalties for obstruction were frequent. . Half way through the .spell Shamrocks recovered again and with good combined efrorts assailed the Taniwha goal. From one of these assaults an almost certain score was saved by brilliant play by N. Hini, who cleared in the face of the whole line of attacking forwards. Up and down play f ollowed, , the advantage being mostly in Shamrock's favour, but the defence could not again be penetrated, and a very fine game ended in a victory, for Shamrocks. Messrs. Watts and Casey refereed. Shamrocks 1 goal, Taniwha 0. GAME DRAWN. One of the fastest games played between B grade teams was seen in the match Mamaku versus Hinemoa. Both sides were playing improved games, the venue of play was ever changing, and it was not until towards the end of the first spell that Mamaku were able to penetrate their opponent's defence, N. Brennan scoring. Hinemoa were unluclcy on several ctceasions as the advantage of play was slightly theirs, but fine back play by L. Thomas for Mamaku frequently upset their attacking movements. Hinemoa Equalise. , Even play continued in the second half, and the pace was maintained. Each side was having a fair share on attack and eventually Hinemoa

broke away, M. Rikihana equalising with a good shot. Both sides made repeated efforts to gain the advantage from the bully off, but the backs were safe and the game ended in a draw. Mr. Carr was the referee. Mamaku 1, Hinemoa 1.
