MATAMATA' S EASY WIN • IN PEACE CUP CONTEST. FEEBLE. TACKLING.
At Matamata on Saturday, Rotorua made a debut in representative Rugby football, under the control of the Waikato Rugby .Uiiion, and was compietely outclassed by a strong Matamata fifteen. The match was for the Peace Cup. The winners used superior tactics, and had better finish to all movements, and this, together with Rotorua's shocking attempt at * tackling, enahled them to win by the big mar'gin of thirty-one points to three. „ .... _ vnrn-jt's Although the score at .half time was 10 nil in Matamata's favouf, Rotorua had really had the better of the play and it was only in the secoild spell, When Rotorua's defenee compietely collapsed, that the issue was put beyond doubt. Mackay, Archer, Scott, Thompson (captain), Heke. The Play. Matamata kicked off and T. Morrison opened a Rotorua attack from a mark. This was spoilt by offside play which allowed Matamata to take play to Rotorua's twenty-five where, from' a scrum Solomon sent the ball out, Carlson, secured from a pass and went through the opposi-
tion to score behind the posts. Carlson converted. Matamata 5, Rotorua 0. Offside play by Rotorua in a lineout saw Carlson malce a good effort with a kiclc which narrowly missed. A forward rush Ifed by Mackie and Scott took play to Matamata's line where an infringement in front of the posts gave Sutherland a chance to open Rotoi'ua's score, but he failed badly with the kick. A passing rush by the Matamata backs transferfed play to Rotorua's lifie where Wilson snapped up from the loose and ran across to score alongside the posts. Carlson made no mistake with the kick. Matamata 10, Rotorua 0. Failure to go down to rushes made trouble for Rotorua, but an infringement by the home side gave relief. The resulting penalty kick was fast followed up by the Rotorua pack Which 'carl-ied play to their opponents' twenty-five, where it remained until half timel The score then being: — Matamata 10, Rotorua nil. On resumption the Matamata full back essayed a weak clearing kick which was well fielded by Sullivan who ran down the line and passed to M. Morrison who scored well out. The kick failed. Matamata 10, Rotorua 3. Shortly after Porterfield opened up the play and sent a long pass to ' Carroll who scored in the corner. The kick failed. Matamata 13, Rotorua 3. Through offside play by Heke in front of the posts Carlson added three points to Matamata's score. Matamata 16, Rotorua 3. Within a minute of this Carlson gained possession and burst through , the centre to score and convert. Matamata 21, Rotorua 3. The next score was the result of a brilliant movement topped by Mal-
ligan who scored behind the posts. Carlson added the points. Matamata 26, Rotorua 3. The fihal score came from Swapp, who ran round and touched down behind the posts. Carlson converted. bringing the score to: Matamata 31. Rotorua 3.
